13 July 2025 What is The Abandoned Boat Problem to the Community
· Pollution: Abandoned boats potentially have oil, diesel, other chemical reservoirs and lines that leak into the rivers and estuaries.
· Pollution: Decaying Fibreglass (a.k.a. Glass Reinforced Plastic (GPR)) boats deposit their microplastics into Earth’s aquatic eco-system, often ending up in the human food chain.
· Pollution: Wood and fibreglass boats shed their lead and other toxic paint into the waterways.
· Pollution: Rotting and decrepit boats are an eyesore to areas of waterside natural beauty.
· Wildlife: Discarded nets and other paraphernalia left on old boats (many which are partially sunk) are a trap hazard to birds, fish, and other wildlife.
· Safety: Deteriorating boats are a hazard to uninvited curious visitors (many who are youth) who risk injury from boat tip overs or other structural failures.
· Safety: Abandoned boats are a hazard to marine craft navigation, especially when the abandoned boats are completely sunk and hard to see. Especially dangerous in tidal areas.
